Fatum SG oh, but you can pick up much subtler things about the psyche of a society from the dramas and movies also .... take south korean movies for example ... you get the feeling that the south koreans are resentful of the americans ... (watch for the villians) ... but they all look up to the place ... (it's a place of refugee, to migrate, to escape, to send the wayward son to school to .... ) they'll talk about the decadence of the states, and how they are a barrier against the reunification of the han nation .... I can go on and on from tagalog to thai movies, but I'll stop here ...
Fatum SG oh no, I'm talking about serious dramas Rhonda, but even from comedies you can sense the priorities and mentality of that society .... as for Singaporean dramas ... you can easily tell that it's a repressed society too ... trying to find it's voice .... that's why there's not quite a pattern yet ...
Fatum SG woohoo !!! ..... just solved a nasty nasty problem that bedeviled me since this afternoon !!! ....
choco B SG (at the risk of pigeon-holing unique individuals... ) The antics on PCK might be over the top But I think the characters are quite representative of the nature of Singaporeans .
Rhonda SG I don't think a typical foreigner watching the local dramas on TCS 5 would be able to pick out anything about a repressed society. Whilst some directors DO use dramas and movies as a medium to subtly criticise society, I think most just want to make sure they produce something that will appeal to the audience back home. I never think that real Koreans are anywhere close to those drama depictions! I've heard of how rude they can be, jumping queues and pushing you, but if you watch the dramas and derive your perspective from there, you'd think they are a bunch of very polite peeps, which is not the case if you're a stranger. In fact, until you know them and establish some sort of social order amongst you and them, they may not even bother being polite. Don't ask me about TCS 8, I don't go there!
Rhonda SG Hey, just trying to console in my own limited way. I wouldn't know a thing because I haven't even been married.
Fatum SG well ... I think dramas and movies are a good place to start getting a "sense" of a people, since it's a dramatization, subtleties get amplified ... but you got to pick up on them of course ... which is why I love watching japanese movies .... I find the japanese people creepy and fascinating at the same time ... they are perpetual children .... and yet so very deep at the same time ... as for Singaporean dramas, trust me ... with the exception of cringing efforts like the ER man and masters of the sea, you can pick up a lot about singapore .... even from Phua Chu Kang .... what I think a foreigner can infer from the likes of masters of the sea ? ... that Singaporeans have a confused accents ...
